BIRDS – FIRST ENTRY – Below are excerpts from the students ornithology journals.  Some of the longer entries represent a span of 5 – 10 minutes.

Today out our window it is snowing large snowflakes. The sky is gray. Mallie

When my bird watching group waked diagonally across the field, the air was cold on my cheeks. I felt really excited to see birds. We saw chick-a-dees flying over our heads. I felt like a Mad Birder. Gloria

When I look outside, I see snow calmly falling to the snowy ground. I see a bird swiftly fly through the air. I see the trees just standing in their spaces. I see the snowbanks piling high faster and faster. Sophie

Birds are very nice except the Northern Shirke. The shrike kills other birds. The shrike is dangerous-be careful birds! Skylar

I guess the birds liked our sanctuary standing. It is snowing rapidly today. I see no birds. 2 minutes later I notice there is a Baltimore Oriole next hanging limply from the tree. Birds like feeders on the sanctuary. Eli

The sky is multi-colored. Bluish gray mixed with a little dab of white. Looking outside through a window it looked like a snowglobe. Christian

There are no birds in sight, the pinecones are still and empty, snowflakes are flying around, and the bird sanctuary had fallen over from the wind last night. Quillyn

The birds are not active today. The birds are not active today because the pinecones and other feeders are topped in snow. They are scared of the loud on-coming cars on Route 100. The birds are skiddish in this kind of weather. Jonathan

During my observation I did not see any birds outside the window. It is snowing hard out. I saw a bird flying by, I don’t know what kind it was. The trees are still, the snow is white on the ground. I saw a chick-a-dee flying by. Max

This was an interesting bird watch. My group saw no birds and I thought it was fascinating because maybe it was the cars roaring as they went by. Wes

I did not see much looking out the window. I saw snowflakes, tons and tons of snowflakes. I saw really tall trees, cars going fast. The trees made the nest blend in, but I still barely saw a bird’s nest. Ellie

During the Christmas Bird Count, it was very cold, but my group was moving around. My group did not see any birds. We thought that the road scared them away. But, it was still exciting because my class information will be combined with the whole country’s information. Izzy

Today I saw chick-a-dees. Last Friday we put more peanutbutter on the pinecones. The chick-a-dees are going crazy outside. Devan

On this snow afternoon there are no birds to be seen. The sanctuary is tipped over. Flocks are flying and there are still no birds to be seen. Our pinecone feeders are naked and as still as ever. Wait their is a black-capped chick-a-dee in the birch tree. The flock is still flying. There are no birds to be seen right now. Winston

I see the water dripping off the roof, the snow being blown in all directions. The wind is blowing very little. I see the sukkah tipped over and a box by its side. Cars on Route 100 have lights on but they are not very bright. Oh cool, the school bus just went by. Grace

There are some clouds in the sky, but the sun is shining. It is pretty cold outside. There is a lot of snow on the ground. I do not see any birds right now but we did see a couple of siskins and chick-a-dees early this morning. There are a few changes in our bird sanctuary. We put up new bird feeders, there are new supports, and it is in the bushes. River

SECOND ENTRY – Recently we worked with Mrs. K’s class to construct marble tracks. We connected tracks to lengthen the track, raised ends, created rolls, twisted, and more to see what would impact the travel of the marble. The work was done with great seriousness and collaboration. We are moving towards making time tracks with cardboard, octag, and tape. Exciting stuff.

FIRST ENTRY – Our first science unit is on Motion. Your kids have been engaged in learning about Newton’s first law which simply says, objects at rest want to stay at rest, objects in motion want to keep moving, and friction slows objects down.

Everyone had their first assessment this week. Each child needed to write the three principles mentioned above and draw and label an example of the law. It would be helpful if each person continues his/her conversations about this law as each person will be responsible for knowing it upon conclusion of the unit. Check out the Blogroll section: Newton’s First Law.
