SMALL GROUP WORK

We broke up into three groups.  Each group began with a different activity.  In the lab, the students worked on a report about the new learning they gained at the apple orchard on Tuesday.  Each person had to develop his or her focus from the question we posed in class.  Then with the use of our brainstorm the students began writing a detailed paragraph about the experience.  We hope to have the work ready for open house.  After each person finishes his or her writing, the individual will illustrate his or her report in KidPix.

A second group made cornhusk dolls.  We discussed that people of the colonial era used absolutely everything they had at their fingertips.  In this case, dolls were made for the children and by the children with the waste of the corn plants once the corn was used.  Along with our garden work, we are investigating the many ways the harvest brought people hamoniously together.  Each person listened and followed directions to the “letter”.  Everybody worked together to make the experience enjoyable for all.  The dolls required patience because of the materials that were used and the multiple steps needed to be taken to get the desired result.  The most exciting part of the process was to see the personalities of each doll begin to take shape.  We honed our measuring skills in the project too, measuring the height and widest part of each doll.  As they dry, we will continue to make notes on the physical changes that will occur.

The third group went down the street to Bear’s sister’s house to press cider from the apples we picked at Ellie’s house.  I think the children really understand the tremendous work that goes into such a process.  In The Ox Cart Man, the man demonstrates the importance of how he used everything he owned.  We will continue our examination of the story in the weeks to come leading up to open house. Take a look at a few photos of our adventures.

LEARNING HOW TO PLACE PICTURES – O.K. it has taken me all afternoon to load these five pictures and still I don’t like the way they came in.  Oh well, perfection is not achievable.  Please note you can click on any of the pictures and see them larger and not distorted.  When I found that out, I could leave the rest to you.  Enjoy.  Please be patient with me if you have not seen pictures of your child.  I am more focused on learning how to do/use this blog than what I have covered.  Enjoy feasting on the photos, we enjoyed making the applesauce.
