REFLECTIONS OF THE CORNHUSK DOLL

I know my doll had changed in cm. The height of my doll on Sept. 26th was 20 cm. it shrunk by 1 cm. from Oct. 2nd too Oct. 14th it did not shrink in the tiniest bit. The widest part shrunk only 1 whole cm. That is how my doll changed in cm. -Christian

I know my doll changed in size from Sept. 26th to Oct. 2nd to Oct. 14th my doll shrunk by ½ cm. in height too. From Sept. 26th to Oct 2nd my doll grew by 1 cm. in width. I made a mistake in measuring my doll in width because a cornhusk doll cannot grow. My doll shrunk and *grew in both measurements. *I think I made a mistake. -Eli

I know my doll changed in size. I know my doll shrunk at least ten 10 cm. Because I cut the arms off my doll. I know the height of my doll changed one cm. I know my doll changed in width and height. -Wes

I know from the secondnd of October to the thirtieth of October my doll lost 9 cm in height. And in the width it stayed the same the hole time, 7 cm. That was disappointing. The height of my doll at first changed by a half cm and it then changed 9 cm after that! At first the width was 7 cm and then it was seven cm and then it was seven centimeters. My doll changed a lot in height but not in width. -Grace

I know my doll changed in size. At first the height of my doll was 24½ cm, then it was 23½ cm. After Oct. 2nd it did not shrink. The width was 11 cm, then 11 cm, finally it was 10½ cm. The width changed ½ cm. The width shrunk ½ cm less than the height. My doll at first was very fat but now it got really, really skinny. Also my doll’s hair got shorter. I know my doll changed in width and height. -Ellie

I know my doll changed in size. On September 26th the height of my doll was 13 cm more than the width of my doll. My doll shrunk 4 cm in 1½ months. My doll also shrunk 4 cm in width. I know my doll changed in width and height. -River

WEDNESDAY, 9-24-08

We had a terrific experience today learning, listing, and writing with Mrs. Kurzman. She front-loaded the children with vocabulary they would be reading in the article “Ants” During the process of teaching vocabulary, the students made some amazing connections, thus creating and cementing their learning. It is difficult to recapture the students thinking within this piece, but I will try. One of the words was, stalk. Sophie said, “I know what that is…my dad told me about the stocks…with money.” Eli chimed in stating, “Yeah, and there is stocking shelves…people do that.” Someone else acted out an animal stalking its prey. As you can see, the conversation was rich and allowed Mrs. Kurzman to digress a bit long enough to honor each thought and teach a mini lesson about homonyms and proper pronuciation of words A similar discussion was had regarding larvae and lava. Out of the mouths of babes…I feel really fortunate to be a part of it. Look for some examples or our report writing when we complete them.

KAREN KURZMAN, WRITER & TEACHER

Mrs. Kurzman is back! She will be directly working with the students in the lower unit this year on early release days each month. Tomorrow we are the fortunate ones because she will be teaching a lesson in our class for the first hour and half. Ask your child about the experience Wednesday evening. Our work with her is always exhilerating. Hopefully by the end of the week we will have some our first writing pieces posted here.

In the coming weeks,

please look forward to seeing pieces of writing

from your children on this page.
